While many couples pay no attention to the differences, wedding ushers and groomsmen actually serve much different roles. The groomsmen’s role is to stand by the groom during the ceremony, and the role of usher(s) is to help guide guests to their seats before the ceremony begins. While groomsmen stand during the ceremony, ushers usually take a seat. If there is an aisle runner, it is also the responsibility of the wedding ushers to roll it out. However, ask the couple about your responsibilities beforehand, just so everyone is on the same page.
Oftentimes, in lieu of appointing ushers, groomsmen will just fill in for that duty. However, for big weddings, planners suggest one usher for every 50 wedding guests.
The role of usher is wonderful for younger men who are close to the family, but aren’t quite old enough to assume the full responsibilities of a groomsman, as well as other close friends. It’s a great way to include more people in the wedding festivities.
